Implementation of the Outcome of
The World Summit for Social Development

I. Introduction

The World Summit for Social Development was held at Copenhagen in March 1995, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 47/92 of 16 December 1992, in which the Assembly decided to convene a summit at the level of heads of State or Government. The Summit adopted the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development1 and the Programme of Action,2 which was endorsed by the Assembly in its resolution 50/161 of 22 December 1995.

At its fifty-first session, the General Assembly adopted resolution 51/202 of 17 December 1996, in which, inter alia, it requested the Secretary-General to report at its fifty-second session on the implementation of the outcome of the Summit. It will be recalled that the Secretary-General submitted a report on the subject to the Assembly at its fifty-first session (A/51/348). The present report contains selective information on initiatives/activities that have taken place since the issuance of that report, bearing in mind that many of the initiatives and recommendations contained in the previous report are of a continuing nature. It should also be read in conjunction with the report of the Secretary-General on the First United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (A/52/315) which is also before the Assembly at the current session
