United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability
In 1992, the General Assembly decided that the Voluntary Fund for
the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons - originally created as the Trust Fund for
the International Year of Disabled Persons - would continue as the United Nations
Voluntary Fund on Disability*. After supporting activities in the framework of the IYDP
and the Decade of Disabled Persons, the new role of the Fund is to support practical
action in achieving the target of a "society for all" by the year 2010.
The resources of the Fund are used to strengthen technical cooperation activities in
the disability field by co-financing field-based action related to the strategies of the
World Programme of Action, with special emphasis directed to least developed and
low-income developing countries and to especially disadvantaged groups of society.
