Webmasters' Interface on Accessible
ICT for Persons with Disabilities,
May 16-18, 2006, Cebu City, PhilippinesFollowing a successful
Interregional
Workshop in Manila in 2003, host country organizations Department
of Social Welfare (DSWD) and
Development with the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled
Persons (NCWDP) in partnership
with the National Computer Center (NCC,
now a part of the Commission on ICT,
CICT) collaborated to further technology accessibility for Persons
with Disabilities.
The resulting project involves a series a
workshops and monitoring programs to train and encourage webmasters
and policy-makers to become advocates of Accessible ICT for Persons
with Disabilities.
Regional Workshops
Vision Office acted as main resource for the delivery of three
workshops targeting participants from the three major regions of the
Philippines.
The three workshops resulted in strong advocacy and better
networking among webmasters and policy-makers. The organizers also
renewed their commitment to Accessible ICT through a Memorandum of
Understanding and a series of follow-on activities.
Follow-Up Activities
The organizers took further action to keep the momentum among
participants.
- Search for Good Practices. NCC and NCWDP periodically
review participants' websites for improvements and ideas. Model
websites by participants are introduced during succeeding workshops.
- Disabled-Friendly Website Awards.
The organizers have already awarded the House of Representatives and
ATRIEV for best practices.
- Development of Standards and Training Manuals. NCC takes
a lead role in coordinating the development of technical
recommendations in preparation for a national policy, and in the
development of training manuals for these recommendations.
The Next Steps
The organizers are planning to conduct a National Workshop
for the participants or regional workshops. This workshop aims to spur
the exchange of good practices and encourage further advocacy. A draft
for adopting a set of technical recommendations in preparation for
national policy-making will be introduced. This is planned for the
first half of 2006.
The organizers are also in the process of finding partners and
funding for a follow-on seminar/workshop to the UN-sponsored
Interregional Workshop of 2003. |
